In the course of years I have become more and more aware of Hans Christian Andersen’s stature. Even after having known him for many years, you discover new facets of this multifarious artist. As an illustrator of some of his works I have read Hans Christian Andersen thoroughly. This created an intimacy with him that still makes itself felt. When visiting Japan on the occasion of the publication of an Hans Christian Andersen edition in four volumes, I got an unforgettable impression of how much he is read, and how deeply he is understood in the East. I would compare the dedication I experienced to the equally unforgettable dedication and insight of those people participating in the celebrations of the poet here in Odense.
